The Carnival
Introduced by the settlers in the 17th century, the carnival starts on the first Sunday in january and ends on Ash Wednesday.
Sunday is traditionally set aside for theme-based parades during which the inhabitants don fancy dress for processions in all of the towns, bringing great delight to all.

Carnival revellers intermingle with drums, brass instruments and whistles.
The processions and major parades take place on shrove Tuesday. Ash Wednesday is the "Grand Vidé" in blanck and white which culminates in the burning of the traditional figure, Vaval, a giant puppet made of paper and fabric, symbolising the carnival spirit.
It is burned in order to be reborn the following year, and thus marks the end of the festivities.
The carnival ends in festive jubilation and balls are organised alla over the town.
